So why does squishing a ball of clay in between your fingers feel so satisfying? How is it a lump of earth can be transformed into a piece of art birthed from your imagination? The holistic powers of clay are as limitless as is your potential to create. Art is an extension of your self, your thoughts both conscious and unconscious.
Clay provides a tangible way to gain control from a world that has been out of control during this pandemic. We now can decide what it will be come. Also, it takes patience as the results are not instant. There are many steps till the piece created becomes a fired glazed masterpiece. It will take focus and implementing a process so it does not fall apart in the first (bisque) firing.
Clay also helps you release aggression. Have a bad day at school or work? In the case of parents reading this. It is ok to pound the clay, in fact you need to, to begin a slab project. And clay can even be stabbed with a tool in some cases!
Lastly, working in a group forms a community of artists brainstorming together building on each other’s ideas. How fun it is to connect with playful, lighthearted experiences to enjoy the company of others.
Included are some of the past projects I have made with my students at Mesa Union School and Grace Brethren High School. Offering classes in Ceramics this summer. Look forward to creating with you soon!
